Method & assumptions
Figures use public fee schedules as of 11 July 2026, for the market, order size and monthly frequency you set, held over 12 months, in EUR (1 EUR ≈ 1.14 USD).
- FX shown assumes you convert currency on every trade (the default for DeGiro AutoFX and Revolut). Holding a US-dollar balance makes FX nearly disappear for IBKR and Revolut — but DeGiro’s 0.25% still applies either way: switching off AutoFX means manual conversions at €10 + 0.25% each.
- IBKR US per-share fees assume ~€150/share — below ~€15k (Tiered) / ~€30k (Fixed) per order the per-order minimum applies, so share price barely matters.
- IBKR is shown best-of Fixed and Tiered. Tiered excludes small exchange/clearing/regulatory pass-throughs (~$0.003/share); Fixed is the all-in rate.
- DeGiro’s €3 EU flat fee is the home-market rate (Euronext Amsterdam/Brussels). Most other European exchanges cost €4.90 at DeGiro (€3.90 + €1 handling), which the calculator does not model.
- “Mix” alternates EU and US trades 50/50 by count; FX applies to the US half only.
- Excluded: DeGiro €2.50/yr-per-exchange connectivity, IBKR account fees (inactivity abolished 2021), Revolut custody fees, taxes/stamp duty and market-data fees.
- Revolut FX uses a monthly fair-usage allowance: Standard converts about €1,000/mo free then ~1%, Plus about €3,000/mo free then ~0.5%, and Premium and Metal have no FX fee. Commission is 0.10% per order with no minimum (schedule effective 9 July 2026); Premium includes 5 commission-free orders a month and Metal 10 — Standard and Plus have none. Allowances, plan prices and free-trade counts vary by region and change over time — always confirm current rates on each broker’s website.

Frequently asked questions
- How accurate are these broker fee estimates?
- They use each broker’s public fee schedule as of July 2026 and the same validated engine FolioView runs on real statements — cross-checked against real DeGiro and IBKR fees. They cover commission, currency conversion and Revolut plan subscriptions; account-level fees are listed separately and excluded from totals. Always confirm current rates on the broker’s site.
- Why does currency conversion change the winner so much?
- For US stocks the FX markup often dwarfs commission. The same €1,000 US trade at 8×/month costs about €240/yr on Revolut Metal (no FX fee, subscription only) but about €936/yr on Revolut Standard, whose FX is free up to €1,000/mo then ~1% — a nearly 4× swing within one broker. If you hold a US-dollar balance and convert once, FX nearly disappears for IBKR and Revolut, which can flip the answer.
- Should I use Interactive Brokers Fixed or Tiered pricing?
- The calculator shows whichever is cheaper for your profile and labels it. Fixed is the all-in rate validated against real fees; Tiered is often cheaper for small EU and US orders but excludes tiny exchange/clearing/regulatory pass-throughs (~$0.003/share), so treat its number as a floor.
- Is a paid Revolut plan worth it?
- Only if the free trades and 0% FX outweigh the subscription for the way you trade — and ideally if you’d hold the plan for banking anyway. Revolut Premium (€131.88/yr) buys 5 free trades a month and no FX fee, which wins for frequent US trading; Metal (€239.88/yr) adds 5 more free trades. For occasional trades the free Standard plan’s 0.10% no-minimum commission is usually cheaper — just mind its €1,000/mo FX allowance on US stocks.
- When is DeGiro the cheapest broker?
- DeGiro’s flat €3 EU commission (no percentage, no cap) wins for large, frequent EU orders — roughly €6,000+ traded many times a month — where percentage-based rivals cost more. For small or US-heavy trading it’s usually beaten by IBKR or Revolut.
- What’s included in the yearly total?
- Commission per trade, currency-conversion markup on US trades (when you convert each trade), and any Revolut plan subscription — over 12 months of the profile you set. Account-level fees, taxes, stamp duty and market-data fees are excluded and noted separately.
