Method & assumptions
Figures use public fee schedules as of 11 July 2026, for the market, order size and monthly frequency you set, held over 12 months, in EUR (1 EUR ≈ 1.14 USD).
- ETFs are priced at DeGiro’s Core Selection (Kernselectie) tier: a €1 handling fee per trade, no commission. Non-core ETFs cost the same as shares (€3 EU / €2 US), and DeGiro’s once-a-month free-first-trade waiver — which has conditions the calculator can’t know — is not applied, so €1/trade is the honest ceiling. IBKR and Revolut price ETFs exactly like shares.
- FX shown assumes you convert currency on every trade (the default for DeGiro AutoFX and Revolut). Holding a US-dollar balance makes FX nearly disappear for IBKR and Revolut — but DeGiro’s 0.25% still applies either way: switching off AutoFX means manual conversions at €10 + 0.25% each.
- IBKR US per-share fees assume ~€150/share — below ~€15k (Tiered) / ~€30k (Fixed) per order the per-order minimum applies, so share price barely matters.
- IBKR is shown best-of Fixed and Tiered. Tiered excludes small exchange/clearing/regulatory pass-throughs (~$0.003/share); Fixed is the all-in rate.
- DeGiro’s €3 EU flat fee is the home-market rate (Euronext Amsterdam/Brussels). Most other European exchanges cost €4.90 at DeGiro (€3.90 + €1 handling), which the calculator does not model.
- “Mix” alternates EU and US trades 50/50 by count; FX applies to the US half only.
- Excluded: DeGiro €2.50/yr-per-exchange connectivity, IBKR account fees (inactivity abolished 2021), Revolut custody fees, taxes/stamp duty and market-data fees.
- Revolut FX uses a monthly fair-usage allowance: Standard converts about €1,000/mo free then ~1%, Plus about €3,000/mo free then ~0.5%, and Premium and Metal have no FX fee. Commission is 0.10% per order with no minimum (schedule effective 9 July 2026); Premium includes 5 commission-free orders a month and Metal 10 — Standard and Plus have none. Allowances, plan prices and free-trade counts vary by region and change over time — always confirm current rates on each broker’s website.

Frequently asked questions
- What is DeGiro’s Core Selection (Kernselectie), and how much does it cost?
- DeGiro’s Core Selection is a curated list of ETFs it trades at a reduced rate — €1 handling per trade, with no separate commission. This calculator models that €1 tier. Non-core ETFs cost the same as shares (€3 EU / €2 US). DeGiro also historically offered one free trade per month per Core Selection ETF under conditions; because those conditions can’t be inferred from your inputs, we don’t apply the waiver, so the €1/trade figure is a conservative ceiling.
- Does Interactive Brokers charge less for ETFs?
- No — IBKR prices ETFs exactly like shares: Tiered 0.05% (min €1.25) or Fixed 0.05% (min €3), best-of shown. Its commission-free ETF program (IBKR Lite) is US-only and not available for EUR-listed European ETFs, so it doesn’t apply here. On small ETF orders the per-order minimum bites, which is why DeGiro’s €1 Core Selection tier often comes out ahead of IBKR.
- How does Revolut price ETFs?
- Revolut charges the same 0.10% per order (no minimum, since 9 July 2026) on ETFs as on shares, with the same monthly free-order allowances by plan (Standard/Plus 0, Premium 5, Metal 10). At small order sizes 0.10% is tiny, so Revolut Standard is frequently the cheapest option for occasional ETF buyers — with DeGiro Core Selection close behind.
- When is DeGiro the cheapest broker for ETFs?
- For most regular ETF buyers. At €1 handling with no percentage and no minimum, DeGiro’s Core Selection undercuts IBKR’s per-order minimum and beats Revolut once your order size grows past a few hundred euro. It’s only pipped by Revolut on very small, infrequent buys where 0.10% is less than €1 — and only if you stick to Core Selection ETFs.
- Why is this different from the stock calculator?
- Only DeGiro changes: its Core Selection ETF tier (€1) replaces the €3 EU / €2 US share commission, which flips the ranking — DeGiro moves from most-expensive on shares to often cheapest on ETFs. IBKR and Revolut price ETFs identically to shares, so their numbers match the stock calculator.
- What’s included in the yearly ETF total?
- Commission or handling per trade (DeGiro €1 Core Selection; IBKR/Revolut their share rates), currency-conversion markup on USD-listed ETFs when you convert each trade, and any Revolut plan subscription — over 12 months of the profile you set. Account-level fees, taxes, stamp duty and market-data fees are excluded and noted separately.
