DeGiro vs Interactive Brokers: which is cheaper?
IBKR’s percentage-based pricing (best-of Fixed and Tiered) undercuts DeGiro’s flat €3 across most retail trading, especially US stocks and small-to-mid EU orders. DeGiro’s flat fee only pulls ahead for large EU orders traded very frequently. Set your profile below to see your number.

Method & assumptions
Figures use public fee schedules as of 11 July 2026, for the market, order size and monthly frequency you set, held over 12 months, in EUR (1 EUR ≈ 1.14 USD).
- FX shown assumes you convert currency on every trade (the default for DeGiro AutoFX and Revolut). Holding a US-dollar balance makes FX nearly disappear for IBKR and Revolut — but DeGiro’s 0.25% still applies either way: switching off AutoFX means manual conversions at €10 + 0.25% each.
- IBKR US per-share fees assume ~€150/share — below ~€15k (Tiered) / ~€30k (Fixed) per order the per-order minimum applies, so share price barely matters.
- IBKR is shown best-of Fixed and Tiered. Tiered excludes small exchange/clearing/regulatory pass-throughs (~$0.003/share); Fixed is the all-in rate.
- DeGiro’s €3 EU flat fee is the home-market rate (Euronext Amsterdam/Brussels). Most other European exchanges cost €4.90 at DeGiro (€3.90 + €1 handling), which the calculator does not model.
- “Mix” alternates EU and US trades 50/50 by count; FX applies to the US half only.
- Excluded: DeGiro €2.50/yr-per-exchange connectivity, IBKR account fees (inactivity abolished 2021), Revolut custody fees, taxes/stamp duty and market-data fees.
- Revolut FX uses a monthly fair-usage allowance: Standard converts about €1,000/mo free then ~1%, Plus about €3,000/mo free then ~0.5%, and Premium and Metal have no FX fee. Commission is 0.10% per order with no minimum (schedule effective 9 July 2026); Premium includes 5 commission-free orders a month and Metal 10 — Standard and Plus have none. Allowances, plan prices and free-trade counts vary by region and change over time — always confirm current rates on each broker’s website.

When each broker wins
When DeGiro wins
DeGiro’s flat €3 EU commission has no percentage and no cap, so it wins for large EU orders traded frequently — roughly €6,000+ many times a month — where IBKR’s 0.05% adds up. Simple and predictable for big EU buy-and-hold lots.
When Interactive Brokers wins
IBKR is cheaper across nearly the whole retail range: US stocks (about $1/order Fixed, $0.35 Tiered), small and mid EU orders, and anything currency-heavy thanks to a 0.002% FX rate (min $2) versus DeGiro’s 0.25% AutoFX.
Frequently asked questions
- Is DeGiro or Interactive Brokers cheaper for US stocks?
- Interactive Brokers, in almost every case. IBKR US commission is about $1/order (Fixed) or $0.35 (Tiered) and its FX markup is 0.002% (min $2), while DeGiro charges €2/order plus 0.25% AutoFX on every US trade. For US trading IBKR usually costs a fraction of DeGiro.
- When is DeGiro actually cheaper than IBKR?
- For large EU orders traded frequently. DeGiro’s flat €3 (no cap) beats IBKR’s 0.05% once orders get large enough — around €6,000 and up at high monthly frequency. Below that, IBKR Tiered’s €1.25 minimum usually wins.
- Does IBKR have a minimum or inactivity fee?
- IBKR abolished inactivity fees in 2021, so there’s no monthly minimum. There is a per-order commission minimum (about €1.25 EU Tiered / €3 EU Fixed, $0.35/$1 US), which the calculator applies. DeGiro charges a €2.50/yr per-exchange connectivity fee, listed separately.
- Do these totals include currency conversion?
- Yes, when you choose “convert each trade”. IBKR’s FX is 0.002% (min $2/conversion) and DeGiro’s AutoFX is 0.25%. If you hold a US-dollar balance and convert once, IBKR’s FX effectively disappears while DeGiro’s per-trade AutoFX remains.
- Which is better for a beginner?
- DeGiro is simpler to open and its flat fee is easy to reason about; IBKR is more powerful and usually cheaper but has a steeper interface. On pure cost, IBKR wins for most profiles — use the calculator above to confirm for the way you trade.
